Job Description

Area of responsibility:

  • Typically works across product verticals to lead strategic design initiatives and maintain and evangelize game and brand design standards.
  • Works with junior CDs, Lead Artists and game and live game Art Directors to facilitate new design concepts and proposals for app design, metagame feature design and IP and game assets for games.
  • Liaises with Chief Creative Officer, other Creative Directors, Product Owners, Game Designers and Producers to define the project brief.
  • Evangelizes new concepts, art styles and production methodologies to the studio at large including core stakeholders.
  • Partners with Product Managers and Game Designers to concept engaging game and feature designs that meet strategic goals and delight, engage and motivate the most discerning, aspirational and valuable players and set new industry standards.

Leadership:

  • Leads and mentors Game design team.
  • Partner with studio production staff in the processes of strategic design, brand and product positioning and production of art assets for games and applications, including 2-D, 3-D, VFX and technical art.
  • Mentors design staff to think strategically about design and to be able to advocate for and explain their design ideas to partner studios, stakeholders and executive decision-makers.
  • Requires master-level, demonstrable knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and ability to deliver asset design solutions for high-resolution and low-poly pipelines, as well as an advanced understanding of VFX and game software development pipelines and best practices.
  • Works collaboratively with Tech Art team and Engineering Leads to improve on technical guidelines and anticipate and mitigate technical challenges ahead from new designs.
  • Creates style guides and "how-to" guides to catalog and define design standards and represents CCO to define and maintain design guidelines when necessary.

Management:

  • Relies on extensive experience and judgment to interpret product requirements and plan and accomplish goals.
  • Directs the work of game and CG artists through team leadership and in conjunction with ADs, senior CG staff, other CDs and CCO.
  • Works in collaboration with CCO, and supports the Producers' objectives to meet milestones, productivity targets and quality standards while being mindful of team well-being and sustainability.
  • Ability to evangelize app standards and requirements through cross-functional presentations.
  • Attends financial performance meetings as necessary to review the impact and performance of design choices in the market.

Day-to-Day:

  • Responsible for managing the quality and consistency of the day-to-day deliverables of Art Directors/Lead Artists/Production Artists.
  • Define tasks, monitor progress, review artwork, and ensure that technical specifications are defined, understood and adhered to.
  • You will lead by example and by inspiration, finding innovative as well as tried and true ways to improve and cement the relationship between the teams.

Game Design:

  • Work with Stakeholders including CCO, Art Directors, PMs, Audio Producers, other artists and Technical staff to design new IP-themed games. Game concepts can be presented primarily as line-art (concept roughs and fin-line) and rough color-models.
  • Contribute occasional concept line art for IP-related metagame and Live Game Events as IP tie-ins require or apply.
  • Deliver game designs which include Industry-current game models, fresh attitude and solid reference.
  • Support Production Artists and 3D and VFX teams in being able to convert your Designs into final assets that maintain the integrity of your designs
  • Specific art deliverables for each project will be provided at the time of assignment.

General Practices:

  • Work with partners, clients and Chief Creative Officer and the rest of the team as needed to clearly define and encapsulate each project brief, embrace and evangelize new concepts, art styles and production methodologies.
  • Concept engaging game and feature designs that meet strategic goals and delight, engage and motivate the most discerning, aspirational and valuable players and set new industry standards.
  • Help to create any necessary style guides and "how-to" guides to document and define design standards maintain design guidelines with vendors and partners, in order for your designs to be properly realized by others under your direction.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Requires senior artist-level, demonstrable knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and ability to deliver design solutions for high-resolution and low-poly pipelines, as well as an understanding of VFX and game software development pipelines and best practices.
  • Work collaboratively with the 3D and Tech Art team and Engineering Leads to improve on technical guidelines and anticipate and mitigate technical challenges ahead from new designs.
  • Requires an MFA degree with 8+ years of experience in the field, or extensive equivalent experience if no degree. Master of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.

Supervision:

  • Work independently to meet milestones and optimization targets.
  • Assist in writing technical specs and documenting your required pipelines as necessary. This typically requires light supervision from a CD to meet creative requirements, and some collaboration with a Technical Artist and/or Engineer to meet technical guidelines.
  • Attend stand-ups and other meetings as scheduled.
