Doctors Without Borders/ Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international,
independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people
affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters and exclusionfrom
healthcare in more than 70 countries. DWB offers assistance to people in need and
irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
Doctors Without Borders has worked in India since 1999, providing free-of-charge essential
healthcare to people in remote areas; treatment and care for people affected by HIV/AIDS,
malnutrition; hepatitis C, tuberculosis, kala azar and sexual and gender-based violence; an
important subject for our action is containing effect of antibiotic resistance. We also
respond to natural disasters and other emergencies, provides mental healthcare and
advocates for the development of more effective and affordable medicines to improve
access to treatment everywhere.
Doctors without Borders was awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and
Development in 1996 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.
Doctor without Borders India (DWBI) runs projects in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar,
Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand,Maharashtra,Manipur,andTelangana.
Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI) and the endTB project
Doctors Without Borders, and its partners i.e. Partners In Health (PIH), Interactive Research
and Development (IRD), Epicentre, France, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium and the
Harvard Medical School have launched two major clinical trials, endTB and endTB-Q which
seek to revolutionize treatment for the toughest strains of tuberculosis (TB), the worlds
leading infectious disease killer. The goal of these studies is to generate high quality
evidence from a highly heterogeneous population that could lead to a change in the global
recommendations for the management of MDR-TB.
The endTB trials are multi-country, randomized, controlled, Phase III clinicaltrial testing five
new, all oral, shorter duration regimens compared to the current standard of care. The aim
of the trials is to find shorter, less toxic and injection-free treatments for multidrug-
resistant TB (MDR-TB). The experimental regimens mainly rely on newly approved or
repurposed drugs and avoid drugs to which high rates of resistance have been reported in
MDR-TB patient populations.These multi-country trials are being conducted in
Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Pakistan, Peru, South Africa and Vietnam. InIndia the
trials are conducted at Mumbai and Pune sites by Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI) in
Partnership with ICMR- National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) and in support with
National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP).

Languages: English, Hindi & Marathi. Main Tasks & Responsibilities
Accountabilities :
Identify the psychosocial, socio-economic and administrative needs for patients
Actively promote the availability of counseling services and carry out, individual or in group counseling,
basic psycho-educational sessions, to patients, their families (when needed), in order to alleviate their
psychosocial difficulties within the project scope.
Refer patients to other specialists or other institutions for further assistance, when necessary in order to
propose the best support available.
Participate in the creation of any material needed for counseling activities and look after it.
Keep files and statistics of daily activities and participate in team meetings to share experiences and
discuss special cases with other counselors, preserving confidentiality
Inform line manager of any problem of any kind arising during the day-to-day activities.
Take an active part in training, supervisions/interventions and support the activities manager when
necessary in doing sensitization for DWBI staff or external partners about mental health /psychosocial
issues.
DWBI Section/Context Specific Accountabilities
General Activities:
Liaise with Site TB OPD to identify potential participants for the trial, keep records of patients and refer
them to trial clinic.
Keep track of patients clinic visit schedule and make sure they visit clinic regularly
Distribution of drugs blister packs and Issuing of compensation to patients on regular clinic visit and
maintain the respective records for monitoring.
Psychosocial activities
Provide individual and group counseling sessions for endTB trial participants (pre-treatment, at
treatment initiation and follow up, including adherence counseling in collaborationwithNTEPstaff when
possible.
Conduct mental health assessment for all patients at baseline, during follow up, and if needed(suspicion,
adherence issues etc.).
Plan and facilitate support group sessions for TB patients, families and buddies in trial catchment
population
Identify adherence problems in patients. Inform and share information with endTB trial staff.
Contribute to the assessment of health seeking behavior of trial participants.
Identify TB patients needs and report to site coordinator. Assist in the identification of solutions (e.g.,
drug pick-up.
Contribute to the creation and implementation of medium-term support plans, centered in patients
needs, in collaboration with the medical team.
Report any issues related to infection prevention to IECHP MANAGER
Assessment :
Contribute to identifying factors defining adherence for TB patients in site and experiences of succeeded
adherence cases, in order to assess a new strategy for non-adherent patients.
Contribute to evaluate and approach the presence of stigma and discrimination in TB patients
Advocacy
Contribute to advocacy efforts for TB patients
Record patient testimonies of treatment experiences including stigma and discrimination under the
supervision of the Outreach Manager, PS Supervisor, and Advocacy Communication manager.
To be flexible to rotate all interventions of the project.
Qualifications: Counseling, social work, psychology or another similar degree/diploma.
Experience: 1-year experience essential. Experience working in clinical trial desirable.
