Job Description Summary
Rackspace Lead Cloud Engineers support external Rackspace customers, remotely and occasionally on-site, on multiple public cloud platforms. Our Lead Cloud Engineers work with customers and internal teams to manage the onboarding of customer environments as the subject-matter-expert representing Rackspace in public cloud technologies.
Our Lead Cloud engineers are the first point of escalation contact for handling customer incidents, providing guidance and recommendations to increase efficiency and high availability to reduce customer downtime.
We develop tooling and processes to drive and improve our customer experience, create playbooks, and provide mentoring on customer related issues to lower level Cloud Engineers and support.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

Our Lead Cloud Engineers work with customers and internal teams to manage the onboarding of customer environments as the subject-matter-expert representing Rackspace in public cloud technologies.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY:
Experience automating and orchestrating workloads across multiple public cloud providers. Automation experience with at least one configuration management system such as Chef (directly or via AWS OpsWorks), Puppet, Ansible, AWS Cloud Formation, Azure ARM, Salt, or other such tools.
JOB COMPLEXITY:
Provide Fanatical customer support from onboarding through growth at Rackspace. Must be able to help translate customer business requirements into technical requirements and manage the execution of tasks assigned. In addition to providing assigned customer(s) cloud platform support, will be responsible for helping build tools and processes necessary for excellent customer outcomes. Automate infrastructure and develop tools and processes to improve the customer experience and reduce support toil. Develop full stack solutions, from whiteboard to green SLA s. Own issues end-to-end working collaboratively with your team and peers. Work with customers and other teams to troubleshoot customer environments to increase end user satisfaction. Deep dive into complex performance issues to increase efficiency and reduce customer incidents. Mentor others on the team on complex issues and handles the highest level of escalations and customer grievances. Provides mentoring/training and is focused on the evolution of the Managed Public Cloud business.
Tasks include but not limited to:
o Customized configuration of monitoring services
o OS Optimization
o Configure customized patch management strategy
o Configuration/Integration of Custom anti-malware service
o Creation of complex alert response runbooks by environment/application
o Named Lead Cloud Engineer to serve as escalation point for complex/severe incidents
o Proactive problem management of recurring incidents
o Technical Project Ownership for New and Established Workloads
o Participate in Customer Change Advisory Boards
o Participate in Customer Stand-Ups
o Email, Chat and Direct Phone Access with customer
o Innovation Technology Plan developed relevant to customer environment
o Ongoing maintenance of deployment templates for environments to account for changes (IAC)
o Deployment of Cloud environments using custom OS configurations
o Ongoing maintenance of GitHub/VSTS (or other code repo) to leverage cloud deployment templates for customer CI/CD pipeline
o Creation/Maintenance of basic post-deployment infrastructure configuration management scripts
o Periodic Strategic Technical Review
o Review recommendations around Security, Availability, Performance, and from AWS or Azure
o Implement cost saving recommendations by terminating idle or unused resources, right-sizing resources, updating previous generation resources, etc.
o Work with assigned Solutions Architect resource(s) to manage deployments plans for new workloads and services
SUPERVISION: Operates under minimal supervision. Expected to mentor less experienced Cloud Engineers.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, MIS or related technical field required and 7 - 8 years of experience.
AWS GCP or Azure Certified Certifications: Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, MCSE/MCSD (required or exam scheduled before hire date).
Nice to haves: Proficiency with Python, PHP, or Ruby. Experience working in a containerized environment (Docker/LXC). Relevant technical certifications around Red Hat, MySQL, etc.
