The Virtualization Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for monitoring, maintaining and developing the Rackspace VMware virtualization infrastructure throughout our global datacenters. The VI Engineer has an extensive knowledge of VMware product ecosystems and will also handle VMware infrastructure related escalations, and where necessary, work through these issues to resolution with the appropriate vendor
VI Engineer will be expected to own escalations from Virtualization Engineers and Architects, and giving general guidance on best practice. They must plan and perform infrastructure projects and maintenances, with strong risk assessment evaluation skills.
There is a requirement for a great deal of communication in this role with both internal and external customers.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Key Responsibilities
Proactive maintenance and monitoring of Rackspace s VMware Infrastructure Environment, ensuring 24/7 availability to Operations Engineers.
Identifying and implementing improvements to the VMware infrastructure.
Working closely with the Architect Group to deliver the Managed Virtualization roadmap
Creation of detailed environment and process documentation.
Making and implementing improvements in line with the objectives of the Managed Virtualization team.
Assist the Architect Group with implementing key projects
Handling escalations for all issues affecting the VMware infrastructure, including root cause analysis and closed loop communication. Effective use of both internal and vendor escalation channels
Resolve escalated issues from engineers and architects and manage escalations to both internal support or external vendor support as appropriate.
Risk assessment and coordination with customers (internal and external) on implementation and scheduling of maintenance on the infrastructure
Proactively look to improve and add efficiency to current processes and exercise judgment in the decision-making process in order to provide consistent FANATICAL customer service
Diligently follow implementation process, procedure and standards of the Managed Virtualization team.
Provide support, guidance and hands-on assistance with implementing key projects for other Practice Area teams
Utilize all available monitoring and analysis tools to their fullest extent (Nimbus, vROps, Reflex, etc.), in order to make proactive changes to the environment that improve stability and performance
Present relevant information to key stakeholders both in real- time (NOC) and through monthly reports that follow a PPP structure or similar
Administrative tasks for Operations support (e.g. Managing RVI access)
Key Performance Indicators (against each key accountability)
Monitoring and timely response to JIRA and Slack notifications
Improved infrastructure uptime and stability
Demonstrated control and understanding of the environment
Successful co-ordination of events and issues with the VMware team
Timely response to break- fix alerts
Remaining up-to-date with essential tools and technologies
Engagement with internal teams
MAIN CONTACTS (external/internal):
Team members daily, in person/via Zoom
Other departments daily, in person, written through emails and tickets and on the phone
External contact with Customers regularly, written through emails and tickets and on the phone

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Technical
Experience supporting critical environments.
Excellent knowledge of the VMware product ecosystem (vSphere, vCloud, vROPS, SRM & VCO preferred)
Having a wide range of IT skills (such as Windows, Linux, Storage, Networking) to an intermediate level would be an advantage.
Scripting skills (e.g. PowerShell) would be highly advantageous
Current VCP certification or higher
Minimum 4+ years experience working in a large VMware environment
Non-technical
Able to communicate in a clear and concise manner both in a written form of emails and ticket comments and verbally, internally and on the phone with customers.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Self-motivated; ability to maintain excellence in service with minimum supervision
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability and desire to work within a Team Driven environment and be responsible enough to work with little supervision.
Will have the capability to work under pressure and prioritize tasks
Commitment to see each request/issue through to completion
Attention to detail required to support a mission critical 24/7 environment.
