Job Description

Tests and modifies general systems-level software/hardware, specialized utility and/or hardware. Interprets wireless specifications. Designs test plans, scenarios, scripts, or procedures. Documents systems-level defects, using a bug tracking system, and report defects to developers. Identifies, analyzes, troubleshoots, and documents problems with program function, output, or content. Develops testing programs that assess effectiveness of a new system or modification of an existing system.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 4 years of Systems Test Engineering or related work experience.
OR
Masters degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 3 years of Systems Test Engineering or related work experience.
OR
PhD in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 2 years of Systems Test Engineering or related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

6+ years of Systems Test Engineering or related work experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Collects information (e.g., logs, requirements) and identifies basic patterns/trends related to systems testing.
Conducts log analyses to identify where an issue has occurred and makes recommendations for how to address the issue.
Makes simple decisions as it pertains to system issues.
Seeks opinions from other teams or departments about ways in which a problem can be addressed differently.
Collaborates with functional and lab teams, IO teams, network operators, field teams, and product management teams to ensure that the testing plan is accurate for addressing feature issues.
Networks with colleagues within own domain to gain insight, ideas, and connections. Shares information with peers and junior engineers.

Participates in project review sessions within team to deliver constructive feedback on testing problems encountered by more junior staff.

Communicates with tech leads on a project in order to verify the accuracy as well as adequate running time.
Identifies and creates an influence strategy in order to gain buy-in of new, changing, or existing programs or projects. This includes identifying areas of improvement, recommending changes, and presenting information in a way that will appeal to key stakeholders.
Reviews performance test and adds additional test cases when necessary to ensure that issues are fully understood and analyzed.
Reviews functional test and adds additional test cases when necessary to ensure that issues are fully understood and analyzed.
Writes complex results documents to explain the outcome of testing and associated debugging. Participates in verifying that proposed solutions to identified issues accurately address and correct the problem and the fix does not impact other existing features.
Conducts more advanced field or lab tests as directed by tech leads.
Tests multiple features using the testing framework. Provides input to developer when creating testing framework.
Implements a testing plan by attempting to cause a failure within multiple areas of code.
Identifies test requirements based on input from team and manager with minimal oversight.
Directs and educates a smaller team of engineers to detect bugs in the "system under test" and quickly resolve issues using basic debugging approaches; assigns and delegates testing bugs to a junior testing engineer based on his or her individual expertise.
Addresses general technical issues and escalates only highly complex technical issues to tech leads or Principal Engineers.
Directs small team of engineers on gathering, integrating, and interpreting information from a variety of sources in order to troubleshoot issues and find solutions.

Level of Responsibility:

Working independently with little supervision.
Making decisions that are moderate in impact; errors may have relatively minor financial impact or effect on projects, operations, or customer relationships; errors may require involvement beyond immediate work group to correct.
Using verbal and written communication skills to convey information that may be somewhat complex to others who may have limited knowledge of the subject in question. May require basic negotiation and influence, cooperation, tact, and diplomacy, etc.
Having a moderate amount of influence over key organizational decisions (e.g., is consulted by senior leadership to provide input on key decisions).
Completing tasks with multiple steps that can be performed in various orders; some planning and prioritization must occur to complete the tasks effectively; mistakes may result in some rework.
Exercising creativity to draft original documents, imagery, or work products within established guidelines.
Using deductive and inductive problem solving; multiple approaches may be taken/necessary to solve the problem; often information is missing or incomplete; intermediate data analysis/interpretation skills may be required.
May be solicited during strategic planning period.
