Job Description
- A hardware network engineer is responsible for designing, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the physical network hardware within an organization, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other network devices, ensuring optimal network performance by monitoring activity, identifying issues, and implementing upgrades to hardware components; they also play a key role in network security by configuring access controls and managing hardware related vulnerabilities. Key responsibilities: Network Infrastructure Design and Implementation: Plan and design network architecture, including hardware selection, cabling, and connectivity. Install and configure network hardware like routers, switches, firewalls, access points, and load balancers. Manage network cabling and infrastructure, ensuring proper connectivity. Network Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitor network performance metrics like bandwidth utilization, latency, and packet loss. Identify and diagnose network hardware issues, including faulty components and connectivity problems. Troubleshoot network outages and implement corrective actions. Perform hardware diagnostics and repairs when necessary. Hardware Upgrades and Maintenance: Plan and execute hardware upgrades to maintain network efficiency and compatibility with new technologies. Manage hardware inventory and lifecycle, including asset tracking and disposal. Apply firmware updates to network devices to address security vulnerabilities and improve performance. Network Security: Implement and maintain network security policies, including access controls and firewall configurations. Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity and potential security breaches Collaborate with security teams to address network vulnerabilities Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive network documentation including diagrams, configurations, and troubleshooting guides Generate reports on network performance and usage to inform decision-making Required Skills: Deep understanding of networking protocols like TCP/IP, VLANs, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF) Expertise in network hardware configuration and troubleshooting (Cisco, Juniper, etc.) Knowledge of network security best practices and technologies Experience with network monitoring tools Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Relevant Certifications:Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), and CompTIA Network+.
