Job Description

The System Architect is responsible for defining and communicating a shared technical and architectural vision for an Agile Release Train (ART) to help ensure the system under development is fit for its intended purpose. They determine the primary components and subsystems, identify the interfaces and collaborations between them, define Nonfunctional Requirements (NFRs), communicate the Solution Context and Solution Intent to team members and stakeholders, and work with business stakeholders to help ensure fitness for purpose.
The System Architect for EXP.O NOW Booking collaborates closely with the EXP.O NOW architecture team, applying intentional architecture and emergent design principles to deliver a first-class, modern experience for Expeditors customers. They gravitate toward leading by influence and empowering the teams to determine the best path forward, but are comfortable rolling up their sleeves and demonstrating their vision through working code.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in planning, definition, and high-level design of the solution and explore solution alternatives
  • Enable the Continuous Delivery Pipeline through appropriate design guidelines and investment advocacy
  • Actively participate in the Continuous Exploration process as part of the Continuous Delivery Pipeline, especially with enabler Epics
  • Define subsystems and their interfaces, allocate responsibilities to subsystems, understand solution deployment, and communicate requirements for interactions with solution context
  • Work with customers and stakeholders to establish high-level Solution Intent, and the solution intent information models and documentation requirements
  • Establish critical NFRs at the solution level; participate in the definition of others
  • Operate within the Economic Framework to validate the economic impact of design decisions
  • Work with portfolio stakeholders, notably the Enterprise Architect, to develop, analyze, split, and realize the implementation of enabler epics
  • Participate in Program Increment (PI) Planning and Pre- and Post-PI Planning, System and Solution Demos, and Inspect and Adapt events
  • Define, explore, and support the implementation of ART and Solution Train Enablers to evolve solution intent, working directly with Agile teams to implement them
  • Plan and develop the Architectural Runway in support of new business Features and Capabilities
  • Work with Product and Solution Management to determine the capacity allocation for enablement work
  • Support technology/engineering aspects of Program and Solution Kanbans
  • Provide oversight and foster Built-In Quality, Team and Technical Agility
  • Prepare and manage Solution Enablers in support of Portfolio Enablers
  • Coordinate breakdown of Solution Enablers into ART or Team Enablers
  • Understand the Architecture across the solution and address conflicting or divergent approaches
  • Support I&T engagement with Solution and ARTs/Teams
  • Support the maturation of DevOps
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 13+ years of experience in Java/J2EE full stake development
  • 5+ years of experience in system architecture
  • Proven experience developing strategic system architecture plans
  • Extensive experience in system and network creation and development
  • Solid understanding of information processing fundamentals and best practices
  • Experience conducting technology, trends, standards and products research
  • Experience providing guidance and leadership to novice systems engineers
  • Proven experience identifying, analyzing and resolving system problems
  • Familiarity and expertise in a variety of programs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exhibits a Lean-Agile mindset
  • A passion to lead, inspire, facilitate and communicate
  • Assertive personality, interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Excellent oral, facilitation, and written communication skills with a broad audience
  • Strong understanding of a Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and familiarity with Lean/Agile concepts
  • Ability to collaborate and integrate across all levels of the organization
