The work of medicinal chemists is significant because they might be responsible for discovering new drugs to treat diseases. They also test and improve the manufacturing process of existing drugs. Medicinal chemists might lead a research project in which they coordinate the efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including areas such as biology, computer-aided design, franchise management and process-research chemistry. In addition to conducting chemical research, medicinal chemists work to develop guidelines to make sure new drugs are safe.
