Role as a provider of care:

• Collects data according to established protocols
• Identifies anxieties / fears and coping behaviors
• Integrates principle of growth and development in determining nursing needs.
• Assesses the patient and /or the significant others adaption to the health / illness process.
• Identifies, reports and documents changes in the health status which interfere with patients ability to meet basic needs.
• Recognizes deviations from normal based or diagnostic data.
• Establishes a nursing diagnosis based on needs and assessment data
• Establishes care priorities based on needs and assessment data.
• Participates with patient, family, significant others and members of the nursing and health team to establish realistic immediate and long range goals.
• Uses established policies and procedures to ensure an environment conducive to optimum maintenance and restoration of patient's normal abilities.
• Participates in determining teaching effectiveness by observing a desirable behaviour change modifies teaching methods/activities appropriately.

Role as a teacher

• Identifies situations in which patients and /or significant others need information and /or support to promote, maintain, and restore health.
• Enters into teaching / learning activities that are specific to the patient /significant others level of development, knowledge and learning readiness.
• Supports and reinforce the teaching ofd other health professionals.

Role of a communicator:

• Collects data re: overt, verbal and nonverbal communication of patients and significant others.
• Communicates the plan for care to the health team members in oral and written forms.
• Consults with more experienced registered nurses, or other health care professionals when problems are outside your scope of practice.
• Uses the established lines of authority and communicates in the work setting.
• Uses therapeutic communication skills when collecting data, during nursing intervention and evaluations of effectiveness'.
• Communicates reports and records assessment data, nursing care plans, interventions and evaluations accurately and promptly using the established communication systems.
• Establishes and maintains effective communication with patient, the significant others, and health members.
• Uses effective listening skills.
• Interprets hospital and nursing policies and procedures to patients, significant others, staff members and appropriate individual and or groups.

• Assumes accountability for the quality of nursing care given to patients in an assigned area.

Role as an Investigator:

• Assists in identifying problem areas in nursing needs.
• Demonstrates awareness of value, or relevance of quality assurance, in nursing practice.
• Collaborates with nursing and health care disciplines in the process of monitoring the quality care of patient.
• Assists in the collection of data within established formats.
• Uses established findings of nursing studies and / or trends in nursing literature to promote quality of nursing practice.
• Evaluates own practice by incorporating validated nursing studies.

Role as a member within the discipline of nursing.
